Scores of people have been injured following an accident involving 10 vehicles that occurred on Tuesday morning along the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway.

According to a witness, a trailer whose brakes apparently failed rammed into other vehicles that were stopped for a police inspection at the Angelika roadblock.

Vihiga County Police Commander Benjamin Ong’ombe confirmed the unfortunate incident and said he had dispatched units of police to the scene to help in the rescue operations.

“Yes, it is true there is an accident involving many vehicles. I’m yet to establish the number. I have asked the OCPD and the police on the ground to do that,” Ong’ombe said.

“Police are at the scene. We are yet to establish the number of casualties and whether there are any deaths"

The accident caused a heavy traffic jam on the busy highway as rescue operations were underway and crowds of people gathered around the scene to help or to satisfy their curiosity.

Police, including the anti-riot unit, were mobilised to the scene to control the area and restore normalcy.

The anti-riot police were there to control the surging crowd that was advancing towards the police officers who were manning the roadblock.

The irate crowd blamed the officers for erecting the roadblock, which they said was illegal

Well-wishers rushed the injured to the Vihiga County and Referral Hospital in their personal vehicles for emergency treatment.

So far, no deaths have been reported yet from the incident.
