Eleven people lost their lives during the popular Congolese singer Fally Ipupa’s live concert at the Stade des Martyrs (Martyrs Stadium) in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s capital, Kinshasa.


Reports from the DRC reveal that the Stade des Martyrs whose capacity is 80,000 people was full beyond its capacity.

DRC’s Interior Minister Daniel Aselo Okito confirmed the incident, the death of 11 people, which include two police officers.

He also confirmed that seven other individuals who sustained injuries in the stampede were hospitalised.

"11 deaths, including 10 as a result of suffocation and the crush, and seven hospitalisations," Okito said.

According to Okito, the event organisers bear responsibility for the mishap and said they must be punished.


The Kinshasa-born singer who only heard about the incident on Sunday morning after his performance expressed his pain at the loss of lives and said he shared the grief with the bereft.

"It pains me. I am from Kinshasa and of course, I share in the grief of the families," Fally said.
