The Ugandan government has denounced claims that four paratroopers whose failed landing inside a packed stadium attracted ridicule on social media are their nationals.
In a post on twitter on Thursday, UPDF Spokesperson Brigadier Flavia Byekwaso said the four parachuters were not members of Uganda’s People's Defence Force (UPDF).
Brigadier Byekwaso noted that the chutes in the video were different from those used by UPDF officers at Kololo during Uganda’s 60th Independence Day celebrations on Sunday.
“Our attention has been drawn to a video doing rounds on social media purportedly to be a video of UPDF paratroopers that performed a tremendous job on Independence Day. Therefore, ignore this video because it is fake. A keen eye will see that the Parachutes are not the ones that were used at Kololo ceremonial grounds,” Byekwaso said on Twitter.
The UPDF Spokesperson defended his officers’ competence saying saying the huge crowds captured in the said video were not those present during the Kololo celebrations.
“Secondly, such a crowd did not attend the Independence Celebration in Kololo due to COVID-19 restrictions & all our paratroopers had successful jumps,” he added.
In the said video widely circulated on various social media platforms, four paratroopers are seen approaching a stadium from the air but things go south seeing them land into crowds.
