Police have launched a manhunt for a church caretaker who is suspected of breaking into a church and stealing over Sh1.5 million.

The incident that has left the clergy and congregants in shock happened at the Kangemi ACK All Saint Mountain View Church in Kangemi, Dagoretti Sub-County.

The church discovered the money which was collected on Sunday for the development of the church was missing from a drawer at the church’s altar when the church elder identified as John Wainaina and the church treasurer Elizabeth Njoki went to pick up the money on Monday morning.

They were first alarmed by the unusual sight of the church doors being wide open in the morning.

The duo then entered the church to probe what was happening when they were further shocked by the sight they came across when they got to the Lord’s table where the bread and wine are consecrated.

They found it ransacked, and the cash that was kept in a drawer underneath the altar was missing.

The astounded duo immediately reported the matter at the Kangemi Police Station and police officers immediately swung into action.

Preliminary investigations placed the caretaker identified as George Mburu at the scene of the crime and apparently he had already gone missing at that time.

Mburu is suspected to have tampered with the church’s electricity and disabled the CCTV system installed in the church before making away with the money.

Members of the church who lived around the church and already heard what had happened to their money came along and wondered in hush tones why Mburu, someone they trusted with their parish, could do such a thing.

A section could be heard pronouncing curses upon Mburu and declaring he shall never prosper as long as he remains under the sun while the other section called for his forgiveness if he resurfaced and repented.
