The Nairobi City County Alcoholic Drinks Control and Licensing Board has ordered the cancellation, revocation of liquor licenses and subsequent closure of 43 city entertainment joints for violating the stipulated licensing condition.

In a letter addressed to all relevant officials on Monday, the Director Liquor Licensing Hesbon Agwena listed the 43 establishments within Nairobi City County that have been earmarked for closure over the failure of their proprietors of the establishments in question to comply with the set rules.

This follows a public outcry from various resident associations, the public and the Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai over extreme noise pollution by the said premises.

“The County Liquor Board has received complaints from various Resident Associations, the General Public on excessive noise and vibration on licensed liquor premises,” the statement read.

“The complaints have also been received by the County Environment Compliance and Enforcement officers and despite arrests and arraignment in court, the proprietors have refused to comply and continues to contravene the stipulated licensing conditions.”

Agwena directed the initiation of the cancellation and revocation process, which will eventually lead to the closure of the premises.

“By a copy of this Memo you are instructed to start the process of cancellation, revocation and closing down the under listed premises as per the provision of the Nairobi City County Alcoholic Drinks Control and Licensing Act 2014 in line with Section 21(1) and 35(3),” the letter read.

“You are advised to Co-opt technical teams from urban planning and County NEMA to offer Technical advice and support.”

Robert Alai.

Through his Twitter account, Alai thanked the director and welcomed the speedy action of the board while maintaining that sanity must be restored to Nairobi.

“Thank you Director - Liquor Licensing for acting so fast,” Alai tweeted.

“The whole of Nairobi must experience sanity.”
