Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua now says his administration with President William Ruto is inheriting empty coffers and at a time when the economy is on its knees.

Gachagua, in his inaugural speech at Kasarani after being sworn into office, said the Kenya Kwanza coalition government had inherited a "dilapidated economy that is on the verge of a shutdown".

He speaking on Tuesday at the Moi International Sport Center Kasarani shortly after being sworn in as the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya.


The new DP revealed that close to six million Kenyans were unemployed, and that civil servants were demoralised.

"The truth of the matter is that we have inherited a dilapidated economy that is almost facing an economic shutdown, we have Sh10 billion public debt, six million Kenyans have no employment we have a demoralized public service," Gachagua said at Kasarani.

Gachagua acknowledged the tremendous task that is ahead of the UDA duo as far as the reviving the Kenyan economy is concerned accusing the outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta, that he and Ruto served in, leaving behind an ailing economy.

"We have a huge task to liberate this country and bring it back to where Kibaki left it," he stated.


According to the former Mathira Member of Parliament (MP), the public coffers are empty making the task ahead Herculian.

"We have talked to the treasury, and the coffers are empty. We will have to start from scratch," he added.

His remarks were directed at immediate former President Kenyatta, who was present, and his administration that both Ruto and Gachagua served in from 2013 before they challenged him and his preferred successor, Raila Odinga of Azimio in the recent election.
