Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has directed a prompt headcount of all Kiambu County government employees to identify any ghost workers on the county’s payroll.


Wamatangi said that on Sunday during a meeting with all county workers from Gatundu North Sub-county, Gatundu South Sub-county, Juja Sub-county and Ruiru Sub-county that the headcount was not a witch-hunt. 

He ordered County Executive Members, Chief Officers and Departmental Directors to enumerate all the staff working under them and present the lists before the end of September.

“Every CEC, CO, and director of all departments must submit a list of all workers working under them including the casuals. You must also own the list you will submit so that we get rid of all non-existent workers who have been illegally drawing salaries from the county,” Wamatangi said.

Wamatangi said the registration exercise will be done to ensure all ghost workers are deregistered and curb pilfering of the county coffers through their salaries.


He noted that Kiambu County has been paying Sh600 million monthly in salaries and the ghost workers have been benefitting largely at the expense of genuine workers and denying them better wages.

Wamatangi assured genuine workers that their positions remain safe as long as they perform their duties professionally.

This comes shortly after his Kisii counterpart Simba Arati also smoked out ghost workers who drew salaries from the Kisii County Government.


Arati discovered that the county had employed up to 256 drivers, yet there were only 82 running vehicles.
