Police in Kitui County are probing the heinous murder of a Form Two student who won Sh200,000 lottery from a local betting firm.

The17-year-old Mavindini Day Mixed Secondary School student identified as Syengo Nyamai is said to have won the money a fortnight ago, on February 26, 2023, during the 2023 Carabao Cup Final match between Manchester United and Newcastle United.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss, Collins Karanja, confirmed the police are investigating the unfortunate incident.

Karanja said they are trying to establish Syengo’s last contacts before his body was discovered on March 4, 2023, dumped in a thicket near his home in the Maliku area.

The discovery came after Syengo went missing for six days.

His body was moved to Kitui Hospital Mortuary, where an autopsy was conducted.

The report revealed the deceased had a broken right arm, injuries on his head and his eyes were gouged out.

The DCI also confirmed that two suspects believed to be linked with the minor’s death are in their custody, awaiting the conclusion of the investigations before being arraigned.

According to Syengo’s elder brother, Syengo used a neighbour’s ID to register a Safaricom SIM card, which he used to register on the betting firm's platform.

However, Syengo’s brother noted he did not disclose to the family that he had won the Sh200,000, which is believed to have caused his murder.
