The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) says an "organised group of goons wielding crude weapons" targetted its officials who were preparing responses to the Presidential election petition on its behalf on Monday night at around 8:30 pm.

According to IEBC, in a post on its official social media pages, the alleged attack was quickly neutralised by the IEBC security officials.

“Today, Monday, 22nd August, 2022 at around 8:30pm an organised group of goons wielding crude weapons attempted to attack IEBC personnel preparing responses to Presidential election petitions at a premise within Nairobi. However, they were repulsed by Security,” IEBC tweeted.

The commission condemned the alleged act terming it acts of "hooliganism and intimidation", and appealed to the Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai to probe the matter.

“The Commission condemns this act of hooliganism and intimidation, and calls upon the Inspector of Police (IG) to bring to an end this blatant abuse of the Rule of Law,” the statement read.

This development comes a few hours after the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition and other petitioners filed eight petitions at the Supreme Court challenging the presidential poll results announced by the commission’s chairperson Wafula Chebukati on Monday last week.
