The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati has declared Deputy President William Samoei Ruto as the duly elected President of Kenya.

Chebukati announced the presidential results of Tuesday's election on Monday at around 6 pm, about three hours later than it was expected.

According to Chebukati, Ruto garnered 7, 176, 141 representing 50.49 per cent of the total votes against his chief competitor Raila Odinga who received 6,942,930 votes representing 48.85 per cent in the hotly contested presidential seat.


Ruto who vied on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket also fulfilled the Consitutional requirement that demandended he achieves 25 per cent in 24 counties by getting getting 25 per cent in 39 counties.

Raila on the other hand also achieved 25 per cent in 34 counties therefore fulfilling the Constitutional requirement.

Ruto beat Raila by 223,221 voted to become the 5th president of the Republic of Kenya.


The other presidential contestants; George Wajackoyah of the Roots Party received 61,969 representing 0.44 per cent in the third position and Agano Party's David Waihiga Mwaure came in fourth with 31,987 votes representing 0.23 per cent.
