Nine students from Moi University who were linked to the spreading of hate leaflets in Uasin Gishu were charged in Court on Friday for their offence.

"On 29th July 2022 at Moi University in Kesses sub county jointly with others not before the court, by means of a licensed computer system namely mobile device knowingly published information that is false," the charge sheet read.

The nine students named Beatrice Wangare, Ann Aoko, Brian Kipkorir, Ronald Odhiambo, Martin Rodgers, Josphat Chaha, Ian Muibanda, Samuel Juma and Denis Wakhanya appeared before Principal Magistrate Onkoba Mogire of Eldoret Court where they denied all the charges.

The students were charged with two counts namely the publication of false information contrary to section 23 of the computer misuse and cybercrime Act and another similar count of publishing false information on the same day.

The prosecution opined the works were well intended to cause panic and chaos among Kenyan citizens.

They were granted a Sh1 million bond or Sh500,000 cash bail after pleading for favourable bond terms on grounds that they come from humble backgrounds.

However, State Counsel Anthony Fedha urged the court to grant them stringent bond terms in consideration of the gravity of their offence.

The suspects who did not have any legal representation will remain remanded until they pay the bond.

The case will be mentioned on August 22, 2022.
