President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of the Portuguese Republic has officially received his guest President Uhuru Kenyatta in Lisbon at the commencement of Uhuru's two-day State Visit to the Southern European country.


Marcelo received Uhuru at the iconic Jerónimos Monastery in central Lisbon in an elaborate military ceremony that included a guard of honour and a Gun Salute by the Forças Armada (The Portuguese Armed Forces).


Uhuru extensively toured Jerónimos Monastery, which is an imposing masterpiece of the 16th-century Portuguese architecture, and a global monument where the remains of renowned Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama and poet Luís de Camões are interred.

He later took a short drive, escorted by a ceremonial cavalry of horse riders, to the nearby Belém Palace, the official residence of the Portuguese President.


The two heads of state-led their respective delegations in bilateral talks and addressed the media at Belém Palace.


Uhuru arrived in Lisbon on Monday morning to preside over the high-level opening plenary session of the 2022 UN Ocean Conference co-hosted by Portugal and Kenya.


Kenya and Portugal were declared to be hosts for the 2022 congress after Fiji and Sweden hosted the 2017 inaugural UN Ocean Conference in New York.


The major theme of the conference is Scaling up ocean action based on science and innovation for implementing Goal 14: stocktaking, partnerships and solutions

Uhuru has gone on record as the first Kenyan head of state to visit the Portuguese Republic.
