The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has cleared Murang’a Senator Irungu Kang’ata to contest for the Murang’a gubernatorial seat in the August election.
Kang’ata whose application was earlier rejected by IEBC was cleared alongside his running mate Winnie Mwangi.
He took to his social media accounts to celebrate his clearance quoting the late Kenneth Matiba saying "Let the people decide."
"The journey towards realising the goal of forming a technocratic Muranga government has commenced," Kang'ata wrote.
"We forgive those competitors who plotted our blockage yesterday."

IEBC rejected Kang’ata’s application based on a report from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) that alleged Mwangi had not resigned within the specified timeframe as required by the Elections Act.
The act requires state officers seeking elective positions to resign 6 months ahead of an election.
State officers who wanted to contest in the August 9, 2022 election were required to resign by February 9, 2022.
Kang’ata insisted that his running mate complied with the Elections Act and blamed his competitors for orchestrating the move to bar him from the August general election.
He claimed there is evidence that proves Mwangi resigned on time and promised to return to the IEBC with the proof.
"We have evidence that she resigned on time and we will be coming back tomorrow to prove it," he said.
However, while answering a claim on social media, Kang'ata said IEBC did not reject their application, but they did not submit their papers because they were still studying an objection letter.
"IEBC DID NOT reject our papers or refuse to clear us," Kang'ata said.
"We did not present our papers. We sought time to study an objection letter filed by a consortium of aspirants through their lawyer."

We did not present our papers. We sought time to study an objection letter filed by a consortium of aspirants through their lawyer.
We are not filing any suit.

Before getting into the murky waters of politics, Mwangi had lectured at the University of Nairobi for over 25 years.
