Exiled lawyer and politician Miguna Miguna will vie for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat on a Thirdway Alliance of Kenya party ticket.
Thirdway Alliance made the announcement on Monday to field Miguna as its candidate in the forthcoming by-election, in an unveiling done by the party National Chairman Miruru Waweru.
Thidway already presented the power of attorney granted by the Kenyan-Canadian lawyer to electoral body IEBC.
However, the decision has caused a rift in the party pitting ousted Party Leader Ekuru Aukot against Secretary General Fredrick Okang'o, with Aukot challengig the decision that has been backed by Okang'o.

I want to be clear that Dr @MigunaMiguna is the Thirdway Alliance candidate for Nairobi Gubernatorial by-elections. That is the position of the party. Dr.Miguna has given General Power of Attorney to our NEC officials @citizentvkenya @ntvkenya @TrevorOmbija @KTNNewsKE @K24Tv
The Nairobi governor seat fell vacant after Nairobi MCAs passed an impeachment motion against Mike Sonko, a decision approved by the Senate a fortnight ago.
Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura was last week sworn in as the acting governor ahead of the gubernatorial mini-poll slated for February 18, 2021.
Miguna, lawyer who administered the swearing-in ceremony of ODM party leader Raila Odinga as the “people’s president,” was deported to Canada in February 2018.
The Kenyan authorities have refused to allow Miguna, who holds dual citizenship, back into the country despite numerous orders issued by Kenyan courts terming his deportation illegal.
