The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has confirmed that Deputy President William Ruto will run for presidency under the United Democratic Alliance ticked instead of the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.


This was revealed in a statement by the IEBC on Wednesday that confirmed only one presidential candidate, Raila Odinga, will vie for the presidency under a coalition party, which is Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.

IEBC also revealed that 40 candidates will vie for the presidency in the August election as independent candidates.

The commission has invited presidential candidates or their representatives to the Bomas of Kenya on Tuesday for a meeting preceding registration of all aspirants throughout the country between Sunday next week to June 7, 2022.


The IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati said the meeting will brief aspirants on the requirements and procedures for the registration of candidates.

“The Commission’s Returning Officers shall register candidates to contest for various elective seats in a candidate registration exercise that will run from the 29th of May to 7th June 2022. Prior to the said registration, the Returning Officers shall hold pre-nomination meetings with Aspirants, to among others, brief them on the requirements and procedures for registration of candidates,” Chebukati said.

So far, IEBC said it has received 244 gubernatorial aspirants by Monday. 167 of the number are aspirants affiliated with political parties while there remaining 77 are independent aspirants.

Presidential Returning Officer and the County Returning Officers will clear the presidential aspirants and gubernatorial aspirants respectively during the registration exercise and only after verification of their qualifications for the positions they are contesting for.
