Former Gichugu MP Martha Karua has cautioned Mt Kenya residents against voting for Deputy President William Ruto by the mere fact that President Uhuru Kenyatta promised to support him after his term lapsed.

Karua made the remarks on Tuesday while she was addressing a stakeholders' meeting in Nyeri town where she also advised voters not to vote for Ruto because he is unhappy.

“You cannot vote for somebody simply because he was promised or because he is unhappy. That is not reason enough to support somebody,” she said.

Karua said making and breaking promises is commonplace in politics therefore it is not a big deal.

She recalled the year 2013 when the voters promised to vote for her but failed to fulfil their promise to her.

“As voters, you always make promises to us politicians which you do not fulfil. In 2013, you promised to vote for me, but you did not keep that promise,” Karua said.

The NARC-Kenya leader also advised Ruto to wait for his turn to come if God wills and emphasised unfulfilled promises do not signal the end of the world.

Karua said an elderly person has a more vivid vision compared to a younger person and cited the late, retired President Kibaki as an elderly person who took leadership of this country and steered it to greater heights.

She praised Azimio la Umoja One Kenya presidential flag-bearer Raila Odinga’s clean record and said he would cakewalk the presidential election in August if the Mt Kenya residents rallied behind him.

Karua also advised the voters to choose their presidential candidate wisely to avoid electing corrupt individuals into office who will only pilfer public resources.

She also told the voter to scrutinise all contestants and vote for the best-suited candidates regardless of their political parties, while noting its individuals who deliver services to the citizens and not parties.

Karua said the voters can choose from an array of able politicians in the Azimio Coalition.

"You can vote for a good leader without necessarily joining their party. We should look for patriotic people who will move our country to the next level so that every Kenyan is proud of his or her country," Karua said.

She underscored the need to fight graft and said Raila’s social protection program is workable if the graft is stopped.

Karua further urged politicians to avoid trading insults with their opponents.
