The self-proclaimed African king of comedy, Eric Omondi, has been arrested after leading a group of youth in staging a peaceful protest outside the Parliament buildings.

Police arrested Omondi as he attempted to storm the parliament buildings with a group of youth to protest the high cost of living in the country.

Omondi and the youth who were picketing outside the Parliament Buildings sought audience with the Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetangula.

The protestors disrupted the traffic flow on Parliament Road in Nairobi’s Central Business District as they blocked the road during their protest.

Once it was clear the Speaker was not coming out, Omondi and his mostly shirtless team tried to gain forceful entry into the Parliament premises.

They chanted the late Foreign Affairs Minister Otieno Kajwang’s signature tune, “bado mapambano” as they challenged Kenya Kwanza leaders to resolve the current economic situation that explains the high standards of living in the country.

The protesters carried placards with writings which highlighted their grievance, including high tax rates,

However, police officers manning the Parliament buildings thwarted Omondi’s attempt to access the premises and lobbed tear gas to disperse the protesters.

The protest comes as the country is writhing under the heavy burden of the economy, as most Kenyans cannot even afford basic commodities.
