Starehe-based Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives shot dead a notorious thug who had been terrorising residents of the Mathare Mlango Kubwa area in Nairobi following a fierce gun battle.

The criminal, only identified as Vinnie, is believed to have met his death after walking into a police ambush while on his way to commit some crime.

Once the detectives sited Vinnie, they ordered him to stop, but instead of complying, he defied the order and fished out his weapon, and went on a wanton shooting spree in a futile attempt to escape.

The barrage of bullets from Vinnie’s weapon sent the officers dashing for cover in a drainage trench that was nearby.

Shortly after, the police returned fire and fatally wounded Vinnie in a hail of bullets.

Apparently, Vinnie was on the DCI’s radar for the past few months following another robbery with violence incident in which he snatched a motorbike from a boda boda rider.

Vinnie was also a member of an uprising criminal outfit notorious for committing armed robberies within the Pangani, Mathare, Eastleigh and Huruma areas.

The police recovered a pistol loaded with two rounds of ammunition and five spent cartridges at the scene of the shootout.

Vinnie’s body was later moved to City Mortuary, where it is awaiting identification and collection.
