Schools in the neighbouring country, Uganda have finally reopened after almost two years of closure following the Ugandan Government’s directive on closure because of Covid-19.

The closure puts Uganda among the countries with the longest closure period because of the pandemic in the entire world.

Uganda’s Ministry of Education planned the reopening to be done in phases in order to control traffic flow in the country’s capital, Kampala.

In some districts, day school learners are the ones who opened first as the boarding students were expected to report back to school after Monday.

“All learners in boarding schools in the districts of Wakiso, Mpigi, Mukono, and Kampala shall follow a staggered reporting plan with effect from Monday 10, January, 2022,” said the Ministry of Education.

The Minister for Education Janet Museveni directed that all learners be automatically promoted to the next class without sitting for their final class exams.

However, she suggested that remedial lessons be given to learners in the new classes during the first term of the academic year to cover vital topics from the previous classes.

"Remedial lessons shall be provided for these learners during first term 2022 to help them cover critical content for the previous class," Janet said.

Uganda’s government has raised its concerns and fears that about 30 per cent of all learners who were in school before the pandemic may never go back.

The situation is attributed to various pressing challenges mainly aggravated by the pandemic.
