Four of the five suspects who were arrested in connection with the murder of LGBTQ activist Edwin Chiloba have been set free.

The court released the four suspects after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) made an application during the mention of the case on January 31, 2023, at the Eldoret Law Courts.

This was after Senior Principal Magistrate Richard Odenyo granted the DCI three weeks to hold the five suspects in custody as they continued with their investigations.

After the 21 days had elapsed, the prosecution said it did not have enough evidence against the four that would warrant their charging, and therefore they had to be set free.

However, three of the four suspects were released on the condition that they report to the police every month for three months, while the remaining suspect was released unconditionally.

That only leaves the prime suspect Jacktone Odhiambo as the only suspect who will be charged with Chiloba’s murders as the case proceeds at the High Court.

The court ordered a mental evaluation of Jackton Odhiambo at the Eldoret Teaching and Referral Hospital before he can enter a plea on February 8, 2023.

Meanwhile, Odhiambo will be remanded at the Eldoret GK prisons.

Odhiambo, a freelance photographer who was a close associate of Chiloba’s and roommate, was arrested three weeks ago after investigations tied him to the murder of the activist whose body turned up stuffed in a metallic box along Kipenyo-Katinga road in Eldoret Town, Uasin Gishu County.
