The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has cautioned motorists against drinking and driving during this festive season to save lives.

A survey by NTSA has revealed that there was a 25 per cent increase in the  number of road fatalities in September 20, 2021.

Overtaking, reckless driving, and failure to use helmets are among the leading causes cited to for increase in road accidents.

According to traffic law, anyone found driving while drunk, shall be charged with an offense and liable to pay a fine that is not less than Sh100,000 or face imprisonment for two years or subjected to both penalties.

The announcement comes after the agency partnered with Safaricom and the National Boda boda Association to launch an initiative targeting boda boda riders to encourage road safety.

The initiative also seeks to bring sanity on the road by following traffic lights, avoid speeding or overtaking on the wrong side of the road, availability of helmets for boda boda riders and their passengers, as well as having insurance cover.

The campaign is in response to the growing number of boda boda related fatalities.
