Rescue operations are still ongoing at River Enziu in Nguni, Mwingi, Kitui County following a terrible accident that occurred at the bridge.

Tragedy struck on Saturday afternoon when the Saint Joseph Seminary Mwingi bus carrying Catholic faithfuls was swept away by strong currents of the swollen River Enziu as it was trying to cross.

The whole incident was captured in a viral video by a concerned onlooker who together with other people witnessed the incident unfold.

The occupants of the ill-fated bus are said to have been choir members who were headed for a wedding in Mwingi.

The bus was almost on the other side of the bridge when the overwhelming currents pushed it off the bridge and into the swollen river.

23 people have been confirmed dead as their bodies were recovered as 17 other people were rescued.

Personnel from the Kenya Red Cross and law enforcement agencies are at the scene and launched a rescue operation as well as recovery.

Officers from the Kenya Defence Forces are also reported to have joined the mission.

The Governor for Kitui County Charity Ngilu also went to the scene of the tragedy and condoled with the bereft.

"We pray for God’s strength and compassion to comfort the affected families and friends," Ngilu said.

River Enziu bursts its banks following the heavy rainfall that poured in the region last night.
