President William Ruto on Wednesday flagged off the Kenyan contingent of soldiers to the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) where there is an ongoing conflict.

Ruto said Kenya will always answer the call to promote peace and security in East Africa.

The president was speaking at Embakasi Garrison where flagged off the Kenyan troops.

Ruto said East African countries have a collective responsibility to work together to end conflicts.

The deployed troops will be under the auspices of the East African Community Regional Force (EACRF).

According to Ruto, the deployment is significant and urgent to sustain peace in the region and is necessary.

“This deployment is significant and urgent as it responds to the collective aspirations of a sustainable peace in our region. We owe our brotherly duty to DRC until the job is done,” he said.

The President added that Kenya’s participation in EACRF continues a proud legacy of peacekeeping by the Kenya Defence Forces.

He asked the troops to discharge their mandate professionally.

This comes after the former president and peace envoy Uhuru Kenyatta expressed his profound concerns over the escalation of conflict and humanitarian crisis in parts of eastern DRC.
