The Kenya National Highways Authority has announced opening dates for the closed sections of the Nairobi Expressway to ease the current traffic situation.

Since the beginning of the construction of the expressway, motorists plying Mombasa Road have endured so much from massive snarl-ups to unfavourable road conditions.

KeNHA noted in its notice that traffic management remains a critical component of the project implementation to ensure the free flow of traffic and the safety of road users.

“Even as the civil works are ongoing, traffic management remains a critical component of project implementation. This is to ensure relative ease of movement and safety for all road users,” the notice read.

KeNHA has opened various sections of the road to motorists as part of interventions to address the traffic issues.

The authority, however, cautions that there are some sections of the road that may still experience traffic congestion including those that are under intervention.

Among the sections mentioned by KeNHA where traffic issues may still be experienced include Gateway Mall where excavation and protection of an oil pipeline crossing under the Expressway are ongoing, General Motors area where there is a temporary diversion and the section between Bunyala Road roundabout and University Way where there also is some construction going on.

KeNHA also provided a schedule of projected dates when the closed sections of the road are likely to be open to ease the traffic situation.

According to the schedule, Haile Selassie - University Way Roundabout will be open on December 15, 2021, and Gateway Mall should be open on December 20, 2021.

The elevated section is 91.4 per cent complete according to KeNHA.
