Students from Kibirigwi Girls' secondary school in Ndia Constituency, Kirinyaga county were forced to sleep in the cold after a fire burned down three dormitories.

Locals have said the fire started at around 8pm when the students were still in class for their evening studies.

Confirming the incident, Deputy County commissioner Moses Ivuto said none of the more than 200 students was injured during the incident.

He also noted that investigations had started to identify the cause of the fire that consumed property worth millions of shillings.

"Luckily, no student was injured and we are yet to identify the cause of the fire," he said.

Residents who rushed to the scene to help put out the fire were forced to watch aside as the fire spread due to lack of water in the area.

"We haven't had water for some time and thus we had no alternative but to watch helplessly as the fire spread and consumed all the property in the three dormitories," residents noted.
