Kenya’s oldest safari lodge Treetops has been finally closed after nearly 90 years of hosting royalty.

Treetops, an elaborate treehouse located on the edge of an Aberdare National Park watering hole was synonymous with the British royal family.

This was the place where Queen Elizabeth received the news of her father King George VI’s demise.

It is famously said Elizabeth went up the tree a princess and came down a queen.

The queen and her husband, the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburg were visiting the country and boarded a three-bedroom space in the establishment back on November 13, 1983.

Treetops is one of the many establishments hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, as tourist revenue has fallen by a whopping 90 per cent because of travel advisories.

Initially, Treetops was used by British colonial soldiers as their sniper base before guerrilla Mau Mau fighters torched it down in 1954.

When the place was rebuilt, Treetops lodge took shape on the other side of the watering hole where it has been standing since.
