Kenya Railways has announced the introduction of a new railway link that will connect Nairobi City Centre with Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) from next week.

The Nairobi Commuter Rail Service project will see travelers picked from JKIA and dropped in the CBD and vice versa hence avoiding the heavy traffic synonymous with Mombasa Road.

According to a statement released by Kenya Railways, the service will see passengers dropped at Embakasi Railway Station and picked by a courtesy bus and ferried to the airport.

“Commuters will be able to catch a train from the Nairobi Railway Station up to the Embakasi Village Railway Station after which they will then be ferried through the Airport South Road which has been dedicated to the Nairobi Commuter Rail Bus also referred to as the Bus Rapid Transit Vehicles,” read the statement.

KR said it was implementing the service together with Kenya Airport Authority, which will ensure the smooth movements of passengers into and out of the busy international airport.

According to the statement, more buses are expected be stationed at Embakasi Village Station to transport travelers to and from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

The new project comes hot on the heels of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s commissioning of the Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) where he mentioned the planned extension of the rail to JKIA.
