Former Member for Parliament of Kamukunji Constituency George Nthenge has died aged 94.

His family through his son Edward Musembi Nthenge confirmed his death at his home in Nairobi’s Buruburu Estate on Tuesday evening.

Nthenge passed away due to COVID-19 related complications.

His son Edward said Nthenge was recuperating at his home after being discharged from Nairobi Hospital.

In 1960, he was a member of the LEGCO for the larger Machakos District.

He was also among the leaders who went to the Lancaster House Conference in London and negotiated for Kenya’s independence.

He served as a Member of Parliament for Iveti South in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.

Nthenge also served as the MP for Kamukunji Constituency between 1992-1997.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has mourned the former legislator as a statesman, mentor and pro-democrat.

“Mzee Nthenge was a highly respected elder statesman, pro-democracy agitator and mentor whose journey through life epitomized the rich political history of the Kenyan nation,” said Uhuru.
