The family of veteran journalist Philip Ochieng, who passed on on April 25, has announced that he will be laid to rest on May 14.

According to information released by the family, Ochieng will be buried at his Manyatta village home in Awendo Constituency in Migori County.

The veteran columnist, editor and wordsmith died on April 27 at Ombo Hospital in Migori town after being hospitalised with pneumonia.


His family has released paybill number 8040695 for those willing to contribute toward a “befitting send-off” for Ochieng, believed to have been one of the greatest journalists in Kenya, if not the greatest.

Philip Ochieng Otani died on April 27, but ironically his younger brother Robert Otani, also a journalist of great repute, died nine years before on April 25 after a long battle with prostate cancer.

Ochieng inspired Robert to join the profession, with his eldest son Jack Okinyi following suit by working for People Daily, followed by Robert's younger son Mac Otani, who has worked for Radio Umoja, Ghetto Radio, Royal Media Services and Nation Media Group.
