Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru on Wednesday launched three development projects in one day, handing over construction sites for Kiumbu and Wamumu markets in Mwea and breaking ground for a housing scheme in Sagana, Ndia.
The two markets will provide space for about 700 traders once completed. Each market will have stalls, water and waste systems, ICT hubs with free WiFi, food courts, and a crèche for mothers.
Waiguru said the projects fulfilled a pledge she made before her election.
“We are groundbreaking the markets as I had promised during my campaigns. We have allocated the land, and today we are fulfilling that promise," Waiguru stated.
"As a county government we have constructed 18 markets while 11 additional markets have been developed in collaboration with the national government.”

She added that the markets will be linked to the County Aggregation and Industrial Park in Sagana, which is almost complete.
“Once the park is operational, our people will be tapping into bigger opportunities for better incomes,” she noted.
Local leaders welcomed the move. Tebere MCA Peter Karinga said, “Our town will change dramatically because of this market.”
Resident Martha Wangui pointed to progress in health services and markets, saying, “Governor, we are grateful. Since you came in, we haven’t lacked ambulances or health services. Now our market is also being transformed.”
In Ndia, Waiguru handed over the site for the Sagana Affordable Housing Project.
The first phase will deliver 487 houses and is expected to create around 300 direct jobs, with local suppliers and transporters also expected to benefit.
She linked the housing plan to the Sagana Agro-Industrial City Masterplan, which includes an Export Processing Zone and a Special Economic Zone.
“This is how we position Kirinyaga as a vibrant hub for investors and opportunities,” Waiguru noted.
Kariti MCA Jeremiah Makimi commended the recovery of 252 acres of land that had been grabbed before being set aside for the Industrial Park.
He said, “You have brought back hope in Kirinyaga and changed the face of our county.” County Assembly Leader of Majority Benson Ngahu also noted that Waiguru had “served the county well.”
Waiguru said her aim was to complete the promises she made and ensure that residents benefit from the developments.
