Two police officers were wounded on Monday night after a lorry lost control and rammed a police lorry at a blockade erected on Thika Road to effect the 8pm-4am curfew rules.

Kasarani police boss Peter Mwanzo said the 10:36pm incident occurred after a lorry with three occupants coming from Thika side headed for Nairobi hit the parked lorry at GSU Drift Area.

Mwanzo revealed that one of the two police officers was seriously injured during the night crash with the two being rushed to Nairobi West Hospital.

“The said Mitsubishi FH lorry hit police motor vehicle GKB 384T Isuzu Canter NPR, which was static and parked at the side of the road. As a result of the accident PC Joseph Kiminda had a skull and right-hand fractures while CPL Geoffrey Sigolia sustained a left leg injury,” said Mwanzo.

Soon after the accident, another lorry headed towards Thika side from Nairobi also hit the barricade as police officers were attending to the first accident.

Police were forced to remove the blockade to ease traffic flow, coming as hundreds of motorists have been stuck on the road on Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights as police strictly effected Covid-19 curfew rules.

Nairobi regional commissioner James Kianda on Sunday said the traffic management mechanism would be revised to ensure a smooth transition into curfew hours.

Nairobi is among the five counties which were put under lockdown on March 29 when President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered a cessation of movement into and out of the zone.
