Construction of the Sagana Industrial Park in Kirinyaga County has reached a major milestone, with Governor Anne Waiguru announcing that the facility is now 85 per cent complete.
The site, which includes a County Aggregation and Industrial Park (CAIP) and a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), is being hailed as a transformative project for the region.
Governor Waiguru, who toured the site on Tuesday to inspect progress, said the development is proceeding as scheduled.
“One warehouse is at 95 per cent, while the others are at around 80 per cent, only awaiting floor casting and wall finishes,” she explained, noting that the county has already committed funds for two more warehouses to boost capacity.
She confirmed that construction of warehouses, cold rooms, and other supporting infrastructure is progressing smoothly within the set timelines.

The county is also working to provide essential services such as water, roads, electricity, and security systems to ensure the park becomes fully operational.
During the visit, Waiguru disclosed that 18 investors have been shortlisted to establish factories within the park, all of whom are waiting for the final infrastructural touches before commencing operations.
“This project is a game-changer for Kirinyaga, we are not only creating infrastructure but unlocking value chains for our farmers and generating sustainable employment opportunities for our young people,” she said.
The Sagana Industrial Park is designed as the region’s first climate-smart agro-industrial city, with a strong emphasis on agro-processing and manufacturing.
The investors, she added, will focus on processing goods for export, with particular attention to agricultural produce, leather, and textile products.
“This is how we bring BETA to life—by investing in real infrastructure that supports production, value addition, and access to markets,” she added, referring to the national Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda.
Governor Waiguru also stated, “We are positioning Sagana to become a key industrial hub in the region.”
She added that the initiative is expected to generate more than 5,000 direct and indirect job opportunities for the local population.
The customs-controlled section of the site has already been fully fenced, and construction of the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) continues to advance steadily.
Plans are also underway to advertise the leasing of land and warehouse space to facilitate investment inflow.
To safeguard the long-term viability of the park, flood mitigation works are being undertaken through the construction of dykes to prevent seasonal flooding.
“We are ensuring that this facility is not only functional but resilient. Every detail is being considered to make it sustainable in the long run,” she added.
As work continues, the Sagana Industrial Park is being seen as a key pillar in Kirinyaga’s economic future, blending infrastructure with opportunity to deliver tangible benefits to farmers, youth, and the broader community.
