The Sh14 million corruption case facing former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been pushed to April 19 after open court sessions were suspended due to the Covid-19 surge.

Sonko on Monday presented himself in person before Senior Principal Magistrate Peter Ooko of the at Milimani law court at 9am for the scheduled start of a hearing against him and two others.

He left the courtroom after waiting for hours before Ooko issued fresh orders after Sonko’s lawyers and the other two other suspects appeared before him for fresh directions.

The magistrate, in his fresh directive, cited acting Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu’s weekend order suspending open court sessions indefinitely due to the third wave of the pandemic.

The new trial date was set following a second mental examination report from Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) presented a fortnight ago indicating Sonko was fit to stand trial.

The case will now be mentioned virtually on April 7.
