A suspect linked to the alleged rape and murder of 23-year-old Velvine Nungari Kinyanjui will be held in police custody for 10 more days as detectives conclude their investigation.

Joseph Kinyua Murimi, 33, was arrested and booked at the Kiamumbi police station where the alleged rape case had been reported days before by Velvine's friends and family.

Murimi was initially charged with rape and released on a Sh100,000 cash bail by a Kiambu court but he was arrested after his alleged victim died while being treated.

This come as details emerged of the events that culminated in the shocking death of Velvine.

Investigations by the DCI have since revealed that the suspect and the deceased reportedly met two days before their date on February 23.

Police reports indicate that the two allegedly met on the material day at Q West restaurant in Kahawa West then proceeded to Kijito restaurant along Kamiti Road before finally ending up at Sinnot Hotel where the alleged rape is said to have taken place.

CCTV footage at the reception, according to police, captured the two collecting the key to a room they had booked at the establishment at about 9:00pm.

According to the statement, a witness, a bar attendant, told police the suspect checked out at around 10:30pm leaving behind the deceased telling he had left Velvine in the unlocked room to rest.

On the afternoon of February 24, Velvine is reported to have made a distress call to a female friend from the hotel room and she came together with another individual and took her to Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital.

Velvine was treated for cervical fractures and spine-related complications for several days.

A report from the hospital in possession of the police suggests that she may have succumbed to collapsed lungs after developing compression fractures on her vertebral column on March 9, 2019.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) took over the case on March 12 and re-arrested Murimi for a fresh investigation and compilation of a murder file, before being returned to court to take plea on murder charges on top of the rape charges he had denied.
