Deputy President William Ruto told the Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai to ensure he is not used politically in a partisan way ahead of the 2022 General Election.

Ruto warned independent institutions, including the National Police Service and the Judiciary not allow themselves to used be used by political actors in the election contest.

The DP noted that Government was financing the independent institutions so that they can carry out their mandates in a professional and constitutional way.

“We expect the Inspector General of Police to provide leadership that will ensure we have a professional and independent police service that does not bend to political interests and partisan considerations,” he said.

He challenged Mutyambai to run the service in a non-partisan and professional way, warning the IG that he would be held liable for any police excesses in the political process.

“What we are beginning to witness is a police service that is responding to political issues…the Government has given the Inspector General every support in terms of resources and equipment, you will be held personally liable if the police become a youth wing for a political party,” Dr Ruto warned.

The Deputy President further bashed the IG, accusing police of watching as innocent Kenyans are violated in political duels, in reference to chaos that rocked recent by-elections.
