A court in Nairobi has ordered that former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko undergoes a psychiatric evaluation to confirm if he is mentally fit to stand trial.

This is after Sonko’s lawyers told the court that he had been examined by a doctor at Aga Khan hospital, and a report issued  indicating that he was mentally unfit to stand trial.

However, Magistrate Peter Ooko said two medical reports indicated that he was bipolar but did not capture that he was mentally unfit.

Ooko directed that Sonko be examined by a psychiatrist at Kenyatta National Hospital.

The matter will come up for mention on March 12.
