A woman and her daughter said to have stolen a three-month-old baby at Majengo estate in Nairobi have been arrested in Bungoma after being trailed by officers from DCI for days.

Grace Akinyi Misiani, 47 and her daughter Nelly Achieng' Misiani, 30, were also wanted over links to an incident in which a one-month-old infant was stolen at Marachi estate in Busia on February 15.

The baby was later found at the house of Akinyi’s 21-year-old son, Tony Rogers Ochieng.

In the particular incident, a 27-year-old woman had left her child sleeping soundly at her Marachi house at 9am and proceeded to draw water from a nearby borehole.

But, minutes later when she returned home, she was shocked to find the baby missing and after raising an alarm, irate members of the public cornered the man and retrieved the baby.

In Ochieng’s house, police retrieved a blank birth notification certificate and a payment receipt from a fabricated health facility christened Comcare County Hospital.

DCI established Achieng’, a student at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Bungoma had reportedly months earlier aborted and did not want her health worker husband to find out.

With help from her mother and younger brother they stole a baby boy but when the plot was thwarted they embarked on another baby theft in Majengo estate, Nairobi.

All this while, DCI's Child Protection Unit was hot on their heels and pounced on them in Bungoma after they had successfully escaped with second stolen infant.

According to the DCI, the mother and daughter had even pressured Achieng’s husband to send cash to clear her "hospital bill" after safe delivery even as he demanded proof from them.

The two are in police custody while the rescued baby is now under the care of the Child Protection Unit until an identification process is conducted and collection by the parents.

Police are further investigating whether a two-year-old infant found living with Achieng and her husband was born to them after they found a dubious birth notification from a Busia hospital.
