US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have tested positive for Coronavirus.

Their results showing they had tested positive for Covid-19 came out even as Trump has been downplaying how severe the pandemic had been in America since its outbreak over six months ago.

74-year-old Trump made the announcement on Twitter on Thursday saying he and his 50-year-old wife Melania had gone into self-isolation after receiving their positive coronavirus test results.

He tweeted: "Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!"

Melania also posted: “As too many Americans have done this year, @potus & I are quarantining at home after testing positive for COVID-19.

“We are feeling good & I have postponed all upcoming engagements. Please be sure you are staying safe & we will all get through this together.”

Their positive tests were confirmed on Thursday by a letter from Trump’s physician Sean Conley, who said the president of the free world and first lady would remain at the White House during isolation.

The letter added: "The White House medical team and I will maintain a vigilant watch, and I appreciate the support provided by some of our country's greatest medical professionals and institutions.”

This came as the novel virus ravages the US and claimed the lives of more than 207,000 lives and he has spoken against wearing facemasks and never puts on one as holds public rallies across the United States.
