President William Ruto has cleared the medical bill for 101-year-old Mukami Kimathi, the widow of Kenya’s renowned freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi.

This follows an appeal by Mukami's family members, who had called on Good Samaritans in Kenya to help them raise Sh1,045,883 to clear her medical bill at the Nairobi Hospital.

This forced DP Rigathi Gachagua to intervene on Sunday and assess the situation at the hospital after flying in from Kisumu, where he had been touring Nyanza counties with Ruto.

“On my return to Nairobi later today, I will make time to visit our mother to check on her progress and assess possible interventions to make her life more comfortable. I wish her quick recovery and God's blessings,” Gachagua posted on Twitter.

On Sunday evening, Gachagua confirmed that the Head of State had indeed cleared Mukami Kimathi’s medical bill after visiting her at her hospital bed and delivering the message.

He thanked President Ruto for the kind gesture.

"H.E. President @WilliamsRuto has cleared the Hospital Bill; Thank you, President William Ruto, for coming through for Mukami Kimathi and her family. You are a true and genuine friend of our people. Be blessed abundantly. Always,” Tweeted the DP on Sunday evening.

The DP had ordered Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru to assess Mukami’s situation ahead of his Sunday visit on returning to Nairobi from his tour of Nyanza region with Ruto.

Kimathi’s ailing widow is said to have been admitted to the hospital in Nairobi County on January 5, 2023 with symptoms of pneumonia and was supposed to be discharged on January 12.
