Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi is facing trouble after Kiambu MCAs staged a protest at his office on Monday over the delayed issuance of education bursaries.

The MCAs who stormed the Kiambu County headquarters staged the protest outside the governor’s office and vowed not to move a muscle until Wamatangi addresses them.

The disgruntled MCAs accused Wamatangi of usurping their role and claimed bursary committees were formed in their wards behind their backs.

The 60 MCAs drawn from across political divides led by the Assembly Leader of Majority Geoffrey Mucheke also criticised Wamatangi for linking his office and his Wamatangi Foundation, which they said he was using to access the grassroots compromising their relationship with their voters.

The MCAs also expressed their concern about schools reopening and the bursaries are yet to come through as pressure is mounting from their electorates.

"We represent the people at grassroots level and the governor should choose whether he wants to work with us or go it alone," Kabete MCA Grace Hinga said.

According to Kahawa Sukari MCA Kennedy Odhiambo, MCAs are required to write to Wamatangi before having roads in their wards repaired or if they want to change a street light bulb which he termed as preposterous.

"We represent the people at grassroots level and the governor should choose whether he wants to work with us or go it alone," Odhiambo said.

Ting'ang'a ward MCA Lawrence Mwaura accused Wamatangi of trying to sabotage the devolution.

However, Wamatangi was not in the office at the time the MCAs held their protest and his spokesperson refuted the claims the MCAs made about not being involved in bursary committees.

The spokesperson also dismissed the allegations Wamatangi Foundation was being used to execute county functions and said the MCAs have been involved in the process despite it being illegal.

“Legally they are not supposed to be involved in the process, but it is being done as a goodwill,” the spokesperson said.

The MCAs have threatened to impeach Wamatangi if he does not heed their call.
