Police have arrested a 22-year-old man for impersonating Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and obtaining an unknown amount of money under false pretence.

The young man identified as Kipleting Serem alias Rengstar is a benga musician based in Kamplemur village in Sugoi, Uasin Gishu.

He was arrested after creating a pseudo-Facebook account bearing Gachagua’s name and obtained money from unsuspecting persons from the online community.

Serem took advantage of the prevailing situation and solicited money allegedly for feeding Kenyans facing hunger.

He provided a paybill number connected to a Standard Chartered Bank account, Eldoret branch.

Serem appealed to his 14,000 followers to rally behind his noble cause and promised anyone who complied some divine blessings.


"Goodevening kenyans should we gather something for our fellow kenyans suffering from drought?...Let us come together and do a public harambee for them it will assist them for some time be blessed so much as we support them," Serem wrote.


Detectives attached to Gachagua’s office launched a manhunt for the suspect that led to his arrest in Sugoi.

Police are currently holding Serem in custody as they process him before being arraigned in court.
