The Roads, Transport, and Public works Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Thursday toured the Naivasha Inland Container Depot.

The Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Zhou Pingjian accompanied Murkomen during the trip on the SGR from Nairobi Railway Terminal to Naivasha.

Murkomen expressed Kenya’s appreciation for the good working relationship with the Republic of China, especially in the development of infrastructure.

“As a show of our continued friendship and partnership with the People's Republic of China, I travelled from the Nairobi Railway Terminal to the Naivasha Inland Container Depot today, via the SGR passenger train, accompanied by the Chinese Ambassador to Kenya H.E. Zhou Pingjian,” Murkomen said.

“Kenya appreciates the good working relationship between the two countries whose signature is the SGR among other infrastructure projects.”

During the tour, Murkomen commissioned the Rail Mounted Gantry cranes, which will ease the loading and offloading of containers from trailers to SGR and MGR trains, and from SGR and MGR trains to the trailers.

This comes as the Kenya Railways resumed handling of cargo at the Naivasha Internal Container Depot (ICD) months after the government announced it was reverting those services to the Mombasa Port.

He communicated the government’s intention to develop the Naivasha inland depot to handle goods destined for regional destinations.
