ODM leader Raila Odinga's daughter Winnie Odinga and Wiper boss Kalonzo Musyoka's son Kennedy Kalonzo are among those elected to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

On Thursday Members of the National Assembly (MPs) and Senators cast their ballot in the House to select the nine members who will represent Kenya at the EALA for five years.

Former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar of UDA and Kennedy Kalonzo bagged the highest number of ballots in the voting process conducted by the two legislative Houses.

Kenya Kwanza’s Omar got 253 votes, his coalition mate Zipporah Kering got 223 votes, former Nominated MP David ole Sankok 223 votes and Godfrey Mwangi 213 votes.

Fred Muteti garnered 189 votes to close the top five list from the ruling coalition but was replaced by Falhada Dekow, who was sixth with 174 votes, on grounds of gender balance.

Raila’s Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party, which had presented names of 12 nominees to both Houses, bagged four EALA slots, with Musyoka leading with 262 votes.

Winnie Odinga managed to get 247 votes from MPs from Kenya Kwanza and Azimio coalitions, with Jubilee Party’s Kanini Kega managing to finish in top three with 197 votes.

After voting, ODM’s Suleiman Shahbal emerged fourth among the Azimio nominees getting 181 MPs to vote to secure his position in the regional assembly.

The nine Kenyan nominees will join their counterparts from the other East African countries in Arusha, Tanzania in December to take their oaths of office ahead of their House sittings.

The regional assembly consists of a total of 62 members with each member state submitting nine elected members all totaling to 56 elected members and eight ex-officio members.
