President William Ruto's United Democratic Party (UDA) has distanced itself from the remarks made by the Fafi Member of Parliament Salah Yakub insinuating the party mulls scrapping the current presidential term limit and replacing it with an age limit instead.

The party’s National Chairperson Johnson Muthama issued a statement via his social media, acknowledging the MP’s remarks and categorically stating those were his personal opinions that the party does not share.

Muthama also reiterated that UDA supports the two-term presidential limit and denied any ongoing discussions within the party ranks to scrap it.

“The statement by Fafi MP, Hon. Salah Yakub on scrapping of the presidential term limit and cap it on age limit has made many Kenyans to get concerned and many have called me asking the position of UDA Kenya,” Muthama said.

“Please take note of this, as the National Party, Chairman I wish to categorically state that Hon. Yakub's made a personal statement which has nothing to do with UDA Kenya.”

“As a Party, we stand for open Democracy and we remain supportive of the two-term presidential limit and no ongoing discussions to scrap it,” he added.

The UDA party, through its official Twitter account also issued a similar statement saying it was currently focused on implementing its plans and was not interested in sideshows.

“Remarks by Fafi MP Salah Yakub that there are plans to extend term limits for the President are a product of a fertile imagination by the legislator. UDA distances itself from the utterances by the MP,” UDA said.

“Party is busy implementing the The Plan and will not be part of sideshows.”

Yakub has come under sharp criticism by Kenyans and his fellow party members over those utterances he made last weekend.
