A cybercrime analyst has been charged in a Nairobi court with using a fake university degree to secure a job at the Housing Finance Bank Limited.

26-year-old Gerald Lumuchelle appeared before the Milimani Law Courts and was charged with forging a degree certificate from the Moi University.

Senior Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi heard that Lumuchelle worked at Housing Finance for five months the Human Resources Department allegedly exposed the forgery.

A scrutiny by the bank’s Human Resources Department of the suspect’s Computer Science degree certificate presented on June 13, 2022 is reported to have unearthed the truth.

“You are charged that on June 13, 2022, at an unknown place, you forged a Moi university Degree certificate second class Honors dated December 17, 2021, purporting it to be a genuine degree certificate issued by Moi University,” the magistrate told the accused.

According to the prosecution, Lumuchelle was selected together with four others after applying for the advertised position of cyber security at Housing Finance Bank Limited.


The suspect was the leading candidate in the interviews done by the bank and was hired only for Moi University to confirm to the bank that the degree presented was not theirs.

His name, according to the prosecution, was also missing from the printout of the Moi University list of graduands from the December 17, 2021 graduation ceremony.

Lumuchelle, however, denied the charge and was freed on a Sh100,000 cash bail as he awaits the mention of the forgery case in 14 days for the court to set the hearing dates.
