A sombre mood had engulfed Laikipia County following the demise of the Senatorial aspirant in the August election Steve Chege.

Chege was earlier involved in an accident on Sunday as he was driving along the Northern Bypass in Nairobi when he tried to avoid a head-on collision with a boda boda rider who was riding on the wrong side of the road.

The senator tried to avoid knocking the boda boda rider when he swerved and hit the road barriers before his car went spinning and landed in a ditch.

Chege was immediately rushed to Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital in the Accidents & Emergency Wing, where he was recuperating in the ICU.

Chege seems to have lost a lot of blood, as his friends and family made a public appeal for blood donations.

Unfortunately, Chege succumbed to his injuries on Monday morning and news about his demise was shared by Kirika Githaiga.

“Its with profound shock and acceptance of God's will that we have received the sad news of Steve's demise,” Githaiga wrote.

“We are still at K.U referral hospital following up. The family is here with us at the hospital. Kindly keep them in prayers.”

Chege vied for the Laikipia senatorial seat on an independent ticket.

Kenyans continue complaining about the recklessness of boda boda riders who have, for years been flouting traffic rules and causing accidents.
