The National Police Service has directed all traffic enforcement officers nationwide to impound and charge motor vehicles and motorcycles with illegal lights.

NPS in a statement issued on Friday said it has noted several private vehicles, public service vehicles and motorcycles owners have installed the illegal lights.

“This is to notify the Public that the Traffic Act (Cap 403). Section 55 read with the Traffic Rules Number 23 and 24 provide for the requirements for lights on vehicles (Private, PSV, Commercial, Trailers, Trucks, Tuk-Tuk and Motorcycles),” the statement read.

“The National Police Service observes that several private vehicles, public service vehicles, motorcycle owners have:

1. Unlawfully equipped Lamps 

2. Modified illuminating lights

3. Red Light

4. Opaque rear light

5. Flashing lights

6. LED illuminating bars

7. Unauthorised sirens 

8. Unauthorised red and blue lights.”

The police said the lights are illegal and endanger the lives of other road users.

“The above are contrary to the requirements of the law thus endangering the lives of road users,” the statement read.

Police advised all motor vehicle owners to adhere to the requirements of the law to avoid any inconveniences.

Additionally, PSV. tour and commercial vehicles owners were advised to ensure their vehicles have valid licences including:

1. Road Service Licence

2. Tour Service Licence

3. Motor Vehicle Inspection Sticker 

4. PSV badge for the driver and conductor
