President William Ruto has scrapped the Kazi Mtaani programme that employed jobless youth in urban areas in the country.

Ruto scrapped the programme on Tuesday when he launched the Affordable Housing Programme in Kibra, Nairobi.

The president said the Kazi Mtaani programme was outdated and the new initiative would create more jobs for the youth.

“I understand you have told me you want Kazi Mtaani, listen, The idea of Kazi Mtaani is outdated. Lets leave the work that involved collecting garbage because this will be the real job. There is no more Kazi mtaani, the job will be building houses,” Ruto said.

“The people who will be given the first opportunities to employment will be residents of Langata and Kibera.”

Ruto noted that Kazi Mtaani project provided low-income and limited opportunities for the youth as opposed to his Housing project proposal.

According to the president, the housing project will upscale the number of youth.

He said garbage collection was the county government’s job and reiterated the housing project will provide better and more opportunities for more youth from the area at a higher rate.

“During this project, we will have opportunities for 2500 youths from this area. Initially, only 500 of you were employed per ward totalling 2500,” Ruto said.

“The 2500 people will assist build the houses. Once we begin Soweto C na Soweto D those are 5000.”

Ruto said since the housing project will not only be done in Kibera, they need over 20,000 youth to help construct almost 25,000 units.

“It will not happen here only. We will build houses in each constituency in Nairobi. We need over 20,000 youth in Makongeni where we are building over 25,000 houses to help us with the work,” he said.
