Former Transport Principal Secretary Irungu Nyakera has officially resigned as the deputy party leader and member of the Democratic Party (DP) founded to former president Mwai Kibaki.

Nyakera, through a letter addressed to DP secretary general Jacob Haji and copied to the Registrar of Political Parties, said he had left the party to its “owners” who resisted change.

The former PS boasted of forming a team to formulate DP's strategic positioning paper, leading proposals to the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) and leading talks on party and national issues.

He also added championing the issues of tea farmers, selling the DP manifesto, attracting young and progressive leaders among other things as his achievements while in office.

Nyakera, DP chair Esau Kioni and deputy secretary general Wambugu Nyamu are among key figures who fought for the new tea regulations which president Uhuru Kenyatta signed into law.

The former PS turned tea crusader accuses party leaders of only seeking state appointments for themselves and their kin and playing safe on politics to avoid irking the Jubilee government.

“This was obviated by several press statements issued by DP chairman supporting government programmes that had not even been endorsed by NEC such as BBI,” complained Nyakera.

DP was formed at the height of the fight for multi-partyism after he resigned from President Daniel arap Moi’s regime to seek the presidency and Nyakera joined its pale version in 2019.
