Dr Alred Mutua, President William Ruto’s nominee for Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary, on Monday revealed to Members of Parliament that he was currently worth Sh420 million.

Appearing for vetting before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments, Dr Mutua said he had amassed his wealth through employment salary and running a few businesses.

“My financial net worth is approximately Sh420 million. I have hotels, apartments and a few businesses here and there, nothing much,” he told the Speaker Moses Wetangula led team.

The former Machakos Governor’s wealth declaration was, however, questioned by Suna East MP Junet Mohamed and Kimani Ichung’wah, the Kikuyu MP and Majority Leader.

Ichung’wa sought clarity on his sources of income and what his financial net worth was before he was elected the Governor for Machakos County in the 2013 General Election.

Dr Mutua responded: “Before I became Governor, my worth was close to over Sh200 million. By that time, I had already invested and the investments have grown. What I presented were assets in terms of land that I had acquired from money that I got when I worked in the Middle East, businesses that I was able to start.”

He added that he was a shareholder in a number of businesses that bring him a lot of money and he projects that will further swell his wealth portfolio in the coming decade.

“In the forms I had also listed a few of the companies that I am a shareholder. That shows my source of income. Within the next 10 years I hope to have double my income through the businesses that are there thriving,” he added.


Junet questioned Dr Mutua’s wealth declaration of Sh420 million, insinuating that his A&L hotel located in Machakos County alone was worth more than his declared net worth.

“This hotel in Machakos is it yours? If you own that hotel (A&L) alone and you are saying you are worth Sh420 million only? With the hotel, you cannot be worth Sh420 million only. You cannot, I have refused,” intimated Junet.

However, Dr Mutua defended his net worth saying the said hotel had been undervalued in his wealth declaration as it was still under a huge loan that he was currently repaying.


He said: “When you own something that is under a huge credit, it is very hard to say that it is yours unless you have cleared the credit. That is why the value of the hotel is much less than I would like it to be. Hopefully in 10 years’ time, when I own it 100 per cent, then my value will rise.”

Nominees grilled before him were Prime Cabinet Secretary nominee Musalia Mudavadi, who said he is worth Sh4 billion, Aden Duale (Defence) who said his net worth is Sh851 million and Justin Muturi (Attorney General) who declared his net worth as Sh700 million.
